Year 5 Wonderdome

On Thursday 23rd January, as part of our Space topic in Science, Year 5 enjoyed an amazing visit from Wonderdome – an inflatable planetarium. Early that morning, our fabulous presenter, Dennis, set up the planetarium which filled our teaching hub! When it was our session, we all climbed inside and Dennis took us on a virtual tour of the Solar System. We learnt about all the planets, the asteroid belt, comets, constellations and stars. Because of the shape of the dome, it felt as if we were really in Space!

While we were watching, Dennis gave us lots of information and fun facts about what we were seeing; we then had a chance to ask him a very wide range of questions. Dennis commented on the enthusiasm and level of understanding of all the children who participated which was lovely for him to experience. The last part of the session was the best bit – we went on a virtual rollercoaster ride through Space, seeing everything we had just learnt about.

We ended the session talking about National Astronomy Week which is held every year around February – this is a fantastic time when most of the planets can be observed in the night sky.

Having Wonderdome visit school was an incredible experience and we hope to replicate it in years to come.
