Year 6 Crowned Greenpower Goblins Champions!

Our Year 6 pupils recently took part in the exciting Greenpower Goblins event at Gateshead International Stadium, and what an incredible journey it has been!
The project began just a few weeks before race day when we welcomed Rowland, a Greenpower Ambassador, and George Wright, a STEM volunteer from Siemens, into school. Together, with Mr Baines, they guided our Year 6 children through the challenge of building an electric Goblin race car from a kit. At first, the task seemed quite daunting, but with expert support, encouragement and excellent teamwork, the children successfully built the car over the course of a day before taking it for its very first test drive around our school MUGA.
The learning certainly didn't stop there. Over the following weeks, the children continued to develop their project by designing and creating bodywork for the car, practising their driving skills and producing a detailed portfolio that documented everything they had learned throughout the process. Along the way, they gained valuable real-world STEM skills, learning about engineering, teamwork, problem-solving and electricity as a renewable energy source.
Race day at Gateshead Stadium was the culmination of all their hard work. Seven Year 6 pupils represented our school, competing against 15 other Goblin cars from schools across the region. The event featured a variety of exciting challenges, including a drag race, a slalom course and a knockout competition, where only the fastest teams progressed through each round.
Our pupils were outstanding throughout the day, demonstrating excellent teamwork, determination and sportsmanship. They drove with confidence and skill, winning two of the three events and finishing second in the remaining race. These fantastic performances meant they were crowned the overall Greenpower Goblins Champions! To make the day even more memorable, the team was also awarded the Best Portfolio prize in recognition of the high quality of their work and learning throughout the project.
While we are incredibly proud of the trophies our pupils brought back to school, the greatest success was the experience itself. The opportunity to apply classroom learning in a real engineering challenge, work collaboratively to solve problems and compete against other schools gave the children memories and skills that will stay with them for years to come.
