Summer Term Football

Philip Reilly

In June, a group of Year 3/4 children played in the Philip Reilly Cup, held at St Aidan’s. The children all performed well throughout the competition with all the games tight. They managed to win two games and lost the other two. Unfortunately, this meant that they narrowly missed out on qualifying for the semi-finals of the competition; despite this, the children all had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed their first experience of playing football for the school team.

Year 3/4 football.

This term brought about the Year 3/4 football league, once again. The ten children chosen were made up of nine Year 4 children and one Year 3 child, who had played football on a Thursday evening afterschool over the course of a number of weeks.

The first round of fixtures brought a few butterflies for the children involved; however, the children needn’t have worried with them winning all three games: 3-0, 1-0 and 1-0.

The following week despite having three injuries to key players, the children continued to perform well winning another game to Denbigh 2-0 but unfortunately losing to Backworth 3-0 meaning they qualified for the quarterfinals in the final week.

Regardless of what happens in the final week, all of the children should be proud of themselves as they were real role models for the school. They showed great skill, teamwork and sportsmanship throughout.

Northern Cross

Throughout the year, the girls’ football team have played games in the Northern Cross Cup. This is a knockout competition played against teams from catholic schools across the borough.

Th girls have progressed confidently, winning every game in the process in order to reach the finals of the competition for the fourth consecutive year.

The finals will be played against five other teams (St Aidan’s, St Matthew’s Jarrow, St Aloysius, Sacred Heart and St Cuthbert’s of Newcastle). With teams playing in small leagues and the top team from each playing each other in an overall final to determine who wins the competition.

Unfortunately, at the time writing this, the matches haven’t been played yet. To find out how we got on please check our school’s Twitter/ X account.

Boys and Girls Football

The boys and girls football teams were also involved in two separate competitions held on our Community Field at the start of June - The St Bartholomew’s Cup. The competition was another opportunity for both teams to enjoy playing games against nearby schools.

The children again played really well but were both knocked out in the semi-finals of the competitions both losing on penalties. This resulted in both teams playing in a third placed playoff and in turn finishing in 3rd place overall and the girls losing, making it so they finished in 4th.

Despite the heartbreak of losing on penalties, all the children enjoyed their day of football and demonstrated a great level of skill and sportsmanship.
