Year 5 had a fantastic trip to Beamish Museum recently. This trip brought our Industrial Revolution History unit to life and we experienced lots of aspects of Victorian life. The children took part in a workshop where they had to approach different businesses and persuade them to donate money to improve conditions in the workhouses. They visited the solicitors, a shop owner, a maid and a free mason to tell them how awful the conditions were in the workhouses and how a donation could help make them better – the children were very persuasive! We also had the opportunity to go into the mine and experience what working conditions were like for boys and men. We then explored the town, including the dentist, sweet shop, stables and the bank. We then hopped on the tram back to the Pit Village before heading back to school. The children gained so much first-hand experience of life during the Victorian times and are eager to return!
