Year 6 recently visited SafetyWorks, an interactive safety centre in Newcastle that helps young people learn how to stay safe in everyday situations. The visit provided a valuable opportunity for pupils to explore real-life scenarios and understand how to respond to potential dangers in a safe and controlled environment.
Throughout the afternoon, pupils took part in a range of hands-on safety workshops led by experienced professionals. Using realistic environments, the centre allowed pupils to step into situations they might encounter in everyday life and learn how to make safe and sensible decisions.
One of the highlights was the Metro safety session, where pupils learned how to travel safely on public transport and discussed the importance of being alert and responsible when travelling independently. They also discovered some fascinating facts about the Metro system, including that more electricity is powered through the Metro lines than the amount of energy produced by the sun. Pupils also explored other important topics such as fire safety and personal safety, gaining practical advice about how to respond in emergencies and how to avoid dangerous situations.
The centre is designed like a small ‘safety town’, with life-sized settings such as roads, homes, and public spaces that help bring learning to life. These immersive scenarios help pupils understand hazards more clearly and remember the important messages long after the visit.
Year 6 approached the day with enthusiasm, curiosity and maturity. They asked thoughtful questions, worked well together during activities, and demonstrated a strong understanding of why these safety lessons are so important.
The visit was not only engaging but also incredibly valuable. By taking part in these realistic scenarios, pupils developed the knowledge and confidence they need to keep themselves and others safe in the future.
